continued from San Juan del Sur home Up in Flames Lunch hour - Wednesday the 4th of June, a Toyota Corolla (JI 2762) caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed, destroying the vehicle. The vehicle which belonged to Onan Samora stopped at the intersection next to Hotel Villa Isabella when the driver was made aware of the problem. One eye witness to the fire told me that she noticed the flames underneath the engine and alerted the driver. “He must have panicked because he left the engine running” she told me. Several onlookers responded by using buckets of water, a garden hose and pails of dirt which happened to be piled nearby. Onlookers gave “The Bomberos” (Fire Dept.) a big cheer when they showed up after the fire was almost out (although I did detect a degree of mocking). Got that mandatory fire extinguisher in your car?
A storm called “Soul” (Alma) put some rifts in the roads around town earlier in the week. However, Saturday 31st of May was time for Rock & Roll and “Rifts” of a different sort as arguably two of the best guitar players in Nicaragua, Larry Emerson & Tony Ferrari “dueled” for centre stage at at Big Wave Daves live music night. David Neil (vocals & harmonica), Giovanni I (drums) and Giovanni II (bass guitar) made up the rest of the 5 piece band called “The Persuasions”. Guest spots went to Tim Webster (drums) and Scott McGregor (bass guitar). Some classic rock, a bit of blues and some good old down home rock and roll was a winning combo, judging by the mood of the crowd.
After searching high and low premises have been found for what will likely be called “Il Terrazzo O Sole Mio”. The Dolce Vita building will be transformed into a pizza parlour at one end and an Italian Restaurant at the other. The premise also has a roof top garden which may form part of the renovation. Del Sur will keep you updated on this project. Fundraiser a success Bach on the Beach raised over 1000 pounds of rice and beans for Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos Orphanage in San Jorge. A classical quartet from Managua entertained a full house at The Bambu Beach Club.
Spilt in two, around Semana Santa, the right side of he bar (so to speak) has a new owner and is promising to bring more live music to San Juan del Sur. James Sedgwick and Monica Slade are refurbishing the place and will be keeping a beach bar theme with music coming in from across the country. With their Caribbean connections, we could have a great mix of local and National tunes. |
