Granja said that he was told it was a routine inspection but he also said that the police gave no reasonable explanation for the search and roadside detention.

Granja has made a formal written complaint to the Chief of the Nicaraguan Police (Policia Nacional) in which he expresses his hope that the incident was not designed to harm his reputation. In the letter, he also defends his good name and that of his family.

Sub commissioner Jose Márquez of the Rivas Police Division informed Granja that the officers were from the Anti Drug unit of the National Police Headquarters.
