The incident happened in the neighborhood of La Puebla in Rivas. The attack occurred as the owner entered his own home. The son was also attacked when he tried to get the dog to let go of his father’s head. A member of the Fire Department in a special suit was able to contain the dog. As a result of the attack, the owner had to attend the Rivas hospital to have 50% of his left ear re- attached. The owner describes a common tale of a Pit Bull attack in that the dog will not let go of its victim. On this occasion, despite the owner calling its name and trying to calm it down, it only let go in order to attack and bite the owner’s son in the neck.

Del Sur asked Dr. Jim Dinsmore, a Vet here in San Juan del Sur, if he had any advice for owners of this breed of dog. He said “Generally when any dog attacks like this there was some kind of outside factor, much like humans who will do something completley out of character, it was something that triggered them off”. He added. “All I can say is, look after your pet, feed it and love it.”
